About
Earwitness.me is a voyage through the ear, where sound plays a major role in the discussion and documentation of places, issues and events that I have encountered during my journeys. My name is Houshang Koochaki, I’m a freelance sound recordist-producer. This blog is a space for sharing my field recordings and thoughts. I grew interested in field recording when started documenting the soundscapes of the places I visited as a hobby. Graduating in Electroacoustic studies from Concordia university of Montreal helped me to become familiar with the science and practice of the audio production and post production thus this hobby of mine gradually turned into a passion, a kind of passion linked with my love of nature, animals and traveling that made me give up on city life to become a wanderer.
We are living in an era in which the incredible dominance of the visual modality in society _“eye culture” is deteriorating our ability to listen attentively to our environment, the ability that once was not to say dominant but maybe equally important as our visual sensory. In his remarkable book ” The Tuning of the World “ R Murry Schaefer a Canadian composer, writer, music educator and environmentalist mentioned this important cultural shift in western societies:
In the West the ear gave way to the eye as the most important gatherer of information about the time of the Renaissance, with the development of the printing press and perspective painting. One of the most evident testaments of this change is the way in which we have come to imagine God. It was not until the Renaissance that God became portraiture. Previously he had been conceived as sound or vibration. Before the days of writing, in the days of prophets and epics, the sense of hearing was more vital than the sense of sight. The word of God, the history of the tribe and all other important information was heard, not seen…
Today the normal practice of life experience documentation is by presenting numerous visual contents through the saturated space of social media, with less attention to the delicate details that our other senses can produce. My hope is to create a space in which to engage you with a subject by reading and listening rather than watching and hearing!
